Engagement Photoshoot FAQs

When is the best time of day for photos?

I always recommend golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — as it offers the most flattering light, whether that’s a soft glow in winter or a warm golden tone in summer. Of course, this is Scotland, and the weather has a mind of its own. While we can’t always predict sunshine, cloudy days can actually work in our favour, creating soft, even light that’s perfect for photography at almost any time of day.

What should we wear?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Neutral or contrasting colours that compliment each other often work beautifully, but the most important thing is that your outfits feel like you. A lot of people say to avoid overly bright colours — and while that can help keep the focus on you, if bold colours are your style, go for it, as long as they work well together with your partner’s outfit. I generally recommend steering clear of busy patterns as they can be distracting in photos, but again, this is just advice — please wear whatever makes you feel your best.

Can we bring our dog or props?

Absolutely! If you’re bringing your dog, I recommend starting with a walk so we can capture natural, relaxed moments along the way — whether that’s on a beach, in a local park, or somewhere special to you. Picnics are always encouraged, and props like blankets, champagne, or anything that adds personality to your shoot are more than welcome.

Do we need to pose?

I’ll help with direction when it’s needed, but most of the time I’ll encourage you to forget I’m there and just enjoy the moment together. My style is very natural, focusing on genuine connection, but if you’d like some posed shots or have ideas for specific photos, I’d love to hear them — nothing is out of reach. I may step in with small, subtle prompts to guide you, but the aim is always to keep things relaxed and authentic so your images truly reflect you.

What happens if it rains?

This is Scotland — we embrace the unpredictable weather! Light rain can actually make for beautiful, romantic images, and as Billy Connolly famously said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing, so get yourself a sexy raincoat.” If the forecast is looking particularly bad I will normally have a backup plan for the day or and we can always discuss rescheduling at no extra cost.
